What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy is a holistic system of diagnosis and hands on treatment for a wide range of injuries and medical conditions.
What Happens?
On your first visit, a full medical case history will be taken. An examination will be carried out (you may be asked to remove some clothing for this) and you may then be asked to perform a few simple movements so that the Osteopath can assess your range of movement and quickly diagnose the problem.
The Osteopath will make a diagnosis and discuss it with you. If osteopathic treatment is suitable it will be explained and offered to you. Treatment usually consists of a combination of soft-tissue releasing techniques, and some specific adjustments affecting joints and soft-tissues (muscles, tendons and ligaments). Self help advice can also be given regarding exercise, stretching and other life style issues.
It is important to address any blocks to recovery and the Osteopath may advise you on preventative measures such as postural corrections or workstation set-up to avoid further injury. Initial treatment usually lasts up to one hour, with follow-up visits taking half an hour. Many patients decide that they would like to have periodic preventative treatments to avoid recurring problems.
